Rhinoplasty Philadelphia

Rhinoplasty or aesthetic nose surgery is beneficial for individuals who don’t like the appearance of their nose. They may have a disproportion of their nose when related to their face. The nose may be too large, small, crooked, or wide. The aesthetics of the entire face may be thrown off by the shape or size of the nose. During a rhinoplasty, the bones and the cartilage of the nose are reshaped. Dr. Hoffman can help to achieve better symmetry of your facial features. Rhinoplasty when combined with correction of a deviated septum may even help improve breathing for those with structural irregularities.

Choosing Rhinoplasty at Main Line Institute of Plastic Surgery:

Patients who have issues with their self-image related to the nose may want to consider a rhinoplasty. Though there is no one standard ideal nose, anyone can achieve better nasal proportion. Rhinoplasty can address the lack of proportion to the nose with regards to size, width, profile, nasal tip, nostril shape, and asymmetry in order to achieve better overall facial balance.

If you are considering rhinoplasty, you should have reasonable expectations about the outcome. During a consultation with Dr. Hoffman, you can discuss any concerns you have about your nose and determine if rhinoplasty is appropriate for you.

Your Rhinoplasty: What to Expect

Rhinoplasty Surgery PhiladelphiaThe nose surgery can last between one and three hours and is typically performed under general anesthesia. Your rhinoplasty may be performed as an open surgery in which the incision is made across the columella, the area under the nasal tip, and between the nostrils, or as a closed procedure in which all incisions are made inside the nose. Once Dr. Hoffman has gained access to the region of the nose that will be treated, he will begin to reshape the bone and cartilage.

Dr. Hoffman will individualize the rhinoplasty to your nose. He will reduce, augment, or define the different areas of your nose to achieve the desired results. In some cases, the nasal bones will need to be broken in order to achieve a balance of the nose. Cartilage may be grafted from other areas of your body to help improve the contour of the nose. Cartilage can be taken from the nasal septum or the ear. To finish the procedure, absorbable sutures are placed on the nose. Nasal packing and splints are used to control bleeding and allow the nose to heal. Externally a splint may also be used to reduce swelling and allow the fractured nasal bones to heal. This may be left in place for about a week.

What Happens After Rhinoplasty Surgery?

Most patients are able to return to their normal routine in one to two weeks following nose surgery. Don’t be alarmed if the swelling in your nose does not diminish quickly, as it takes some time to subside. If work on the nasal tip has been performed, it may take up to six months for the swelling to subside.

It may also take some time for you to adjust to your new appearance, especially if you are an older patient. With patience and a bit of caution against activities with the potential for nose impact, most patients are able to appreciate their new nose within three to six months.

Rhinoplasty Q&A

In general, it takes about two weeks to fully recover and return to work and/or school following a rhinoplasty. The timetable can be more or less depending on the complexity of the surgery. Patients who just have their tips adjusted can expect a quicker recovery time than patients who require their nasal bones to be broken. It may, however, take up to 6 months until swelling has resolved and the final result is realized.
